ALN/the hosts will send joining instructions the day before the event, at the latest, via email/calendar appointment – please check your inbox nearer to the event.
This Data Showcase, hosted by the Chairs of the ALN Service Engagement & Impact Group (SEIG), will be an opportunity to showcase what people are doing with data collection, data handling, data analysis and dashboards, sharing best practice, outlining how they handle a data problem, how they engage with data and the impact of it.
We have created a Padlet for use throughout the day. You can add questions here for the panel session (all our speakers will be on the panel).
The programme for the day is as follows (timings are approximate and may change on the day):
- 10.00 – 10.10 – Introduction – Julie Cleverley and Sandra Tranmer (SEIG co-Chairs)
- 10.10-10.50 – Collaborative and Connected Data Strategies at the University of Sunderland Library – Michelle Halpin, University of Sunderland
This presentation explores the data led approach we are developing, bringing together diverse data sources, collaborative stakeholder relationships, and a focus on value for money analytics that support service efficiencies and shape the student experience.
- 10.50-11.05 – Improving Power BI dashboards: supporting library collections and spaces (Jessie Salmon and Shannon Lumley, University of Newcastle)
This session will explore how we have developed and are improving Power BI dashboards to support the analysis of library collections and space usage. We will discuss some of the challenges encountered, including manual data preparation, inconsistencies between data sources, and the need to develop more sustainable workflows.
- 11.05 – 11.15 – Break
- 11.15 – 11.50 – Making data Informed Decisions about Access Broker Extension Subscriptions – Bethany O’Donoghue, University of Manchester
This presentation details how the Excel, Power BI and stakeholder identification skills gained through a data apprenticeship supported decision making regarding the future of LibKey Nomad and Lean Library subscriptions.
- 12.05 – 12.30 – Excel Tricks Tasting Menu – Ruth Burns, University of Manchester
In this session we will share and explain the “menu” we have set up to allow flexible knowledge sharing session that covers a wide range of tips and tricks at various levels of Excel, before allowing attendees to request items they might like to see, or share their own Excel favourites. The menu covers Aperitifs (hot keys and other quick wins), Entrees (simple starter tricks), Mains (more substantial techniques), Desserts (sweet little timesavers), the Cheeseboard (cheesy things you can do in Excel) and Coffee (formulas, a stronger taste that can be mildly addictive.) Rather than working through the whole menu, guests may request elements from any course that catches their interest. We cannot represent all the flavour of Excel in one session, but hopefully this menu will provide something for everyone to enjoy.
- 12.30 – 1.10 – Lunch
- 1.10 – 1.50 – Re imagining COUNTER Data: Leveraging COUNTER 5.1, APIs, and Power BI at Edge Hill – Ruth Smalley, Edge hill University
Historically, at Edge Hill we have taken a light touch approach to COUNTER data reporting, relying on the controlled usage data points that allowed us to compare usage across multiple years. The growth of Open Access usage and the new data available in COUNTER 5.1 led us to re assess how we collect and use COUNTER data to evaluate resource usage. We have used Power BI and automated data collection via the COUNTER APIs to collect the data, but it hasn’t all been plain sailing. This presentation will highlight some of the technical challenges we have encountered, as well as some of the new data stories we have been able to uncover.
- 1.50 – 2.00 – Break
- 2.00 – 2.45 – Panel Q&A
- 2.45 – 3.00 – Wrap up & close
