About this event
Date: Wednesday 19th April 2023
Time: 10.00 - 12.00 noon
Hosted at: Teesside University, The Curve building floor 1 and streamed live (free of charge)
Teesside University is pleased to host Marsha Garratt, an anti-racism educator, and a research fellow at Newcastle University who works with and for the Black, Asian, Global Majority community, to deliver a discussion on Anti-Racism. Marsha will talk through her own anti-racism journey and share her experiences.
Marsha is part of a movement to decolonise the curriculum and teaches on the history of racism, including colonialism, and how this history created modern structural/institutional racism. Her work has an emphasis on engaging with young people to:
- Share knowledge on creation of race and racial groups to prevent internalisation of racist representations
- Challenge institutional racism using a combination of academic, personal and collective experiences of racism
- Communicate this knowledge with a range of institutions for greater awareness on the reality of racism and reproduction of racist norms
Marsha’s talk, which is part of the Living While Black series, takes participants through her own journey and shows how we can all learn to embrace diversity and understand the structures that inform our thought processes and behaviours, because by understanding these patterns, we are able to work together toward an inclusive, anti-racist future, a future in which we can all feel that we belong.
Any library teams are welcome to attend. For anyone attending in person, there will also be the opportunity to have a tour of the Library, Student Life and new PG space at Teesside after the talk.
