This Research Support Group event will discuss different processes, compliance and stakeholders involved in the Rights Retention and REF movement.
It will include presentations and workshops from members representing different ALN institutions. There will also be presentations from people outside of the ALN group and network who want to present their own work related to Rights Retention.
It is aimed at all library and research staff, as well as researchers.

Speakers so far
Speaker 1 - Liesl Rowe - Leeds Becket University
In September 2024, Leeds Beckett University introduced rights retention across the university for journal articles. This was the result of around half a year’s work formulating a set of RR policies and undertaking supporting work, such as refining our new IP policy. The RR process was also a collaborative project, involving colleagues from across the library; our research and innovation team; and our legal team. This talk will cover the process of setting up rights retention and common questions we received from academics. Potential future issues and an overview of the RR landscape will also be covered.
Speaker 1 - Jack Burns - Newcastle University
I’ll start with a brief introduction covering the background of our policy, its implementation, promotion, and our work within the N8 group. Then, I’ll discuss monitoring the policy and the challenges we faced. I’ll conclude with the steps we’re taking to keep rights retention at the forefront of our researchers’ minds and our next steps.”
