Global Equity Network

The Global Equity Network (GEN) is intended to provide a supportive space for people from UK ethnic minority backgrounds who currently work, or aspire to work in libraries to share ideas, experiences and resources, advice and guidance with others who share similar lived experiences.

We aim to make positive contributions to the wellbeing, development, and empowerment of our members – enabling them to thrive in their careers.

GEN and its mailing list will support members to build on the networking experiences of face-to-face events and make connections outside of their home institutions.

Areas of possible connection are, for example:

  • the sharing of:
    • resources
    • job opportunities
    • experiences
    • events/topics of interest (both personally and professionally)
  • asking advice of members across library services
  • organising events and meetings

The above list is not intended to limit the network, but to provide an idea of the kind of uses for which the group and mailing list might be used.

The Terms of Support should match the expectations of all members of the Network and should therefore be reviewed and updated regularly to ensure it is serving a purpose to the group.

Peer Learning Network (PLN)

In July 2024, the GEN launched a new and exciting opportunity to elevate the library, information and knowledge careers of UK ethnic minority library, information and knowledge professionals (or those who aspired to join the profession) by applying for its exclusive Peer Learning Network Cohort. The 2024/25 opportunity was made possible by a UKSG Innovation Award funding.

Peer Learning Networks are a powerful approach to learning and problem-solving that involve a small group of individuals coming together to work on real-life challenges or projects. They rely on a spirit of mutual support and developing relationships. This version of a PLN offered a bespoke model, which included approaches based on theories of social dynamics and networks. The primary focus was on learning through action and reflection.

Further information, including reflection on the opportunity presented, will follow.
