We are delighted that our title sponsor is Browns Books for Students.

The NoWAL Conference will focus on issues of diversity and inclusivity in academic libraries.   The conference is aimed at everyone working in libraries, whether or not they have a specific equality and diversity role within their library.  It will bring together 100+ delegates and speakers from NoWAL institutions and beyond.  It provides an opportunity to engage with the innovative and dynamic activities taking place in libraries across the country and a chance to expand social networks and meet other professionals.

The conference themes are:

  • Theme 1 - Accessibility
  • Theme 2 - Collaboration & Engagement
  • Theme 3 - Inclusive Workplace Culture
  • Theme 4 - Mental Health & Wellbeing

The day starts at 9am for registration; 9.45 for the first session.  The last parallel session finishes at 4.20pm followed by a drinks reception till 5pm 


Delegate Handbook

The Delegate Handbook includes all the information you will need on the day of the conference.  It includes:

  • details of public transport, finding the Foresight Centre, accessing the building
  • a copy of the programme
  • details of the parallel sessions, including abstracts 
  • a list of delegates and sponsors

Registration is a two stage process:

Stage 1 please register your details via the Book Now link below.

Stage 2 Once you have registered, you will receive email confirmation (check your Junk / Spam folders if you don't receive it) which will include a link to make your parallel session choices.  Space in the parallel sessions is limited by room size, so please try and complete Stage 2 as quickly as possible to avoid disappointment!  You can see full details of all the sessions on offer throughout the day in the NoWAL Programme 2019.  Please read this thoroughly before making your choices.

Speaker Fees:

We offer speakers a discounted rate of £35.  The rate is for the first 2 speakers (paying £35 each) - any additional speakers pay the full delegate rate (see below).

Delegate rates:

  • £70 for NoWAL members
  • £80 for non-NoWAL members
Keynote Speaker

We are excited to announce our keynote speaker is Dr Jason Arday.  Jason is an Assistant Professor in Sociology at Durham University in the Department of Sociology. Jason is a Visiting Research Fellow at The Ohio State University in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and a Trustee of the Runnymede Trust, the UK’s leading Race Equality Thinktank. He is also an Elected Steering Committee Member of the Parliamentary Group Comprehensive Future and a School Governor at Shaftesbury Park Primary School in London.  Further information regarding Jason's activities and research interests can be found in his comprehensive biography.


The conference is taking place at the Foresight Centre at the University of Liverpool.

Getting to the Foresight Centre

By Rail: The nearest mainline station is Liverpool Lime Street station.  The venue is situated just west of the city centre, approximately 10 minutes by foot from Lime Street.  Taxis are available from outside the railway station.  

By Coach: The coach station is located at Liverpool One - the route to the Foresight Centre from Liverpool One is shown here

By Car: If travelling by car the postcode is L3 5QA.  Follow directions to Brownlow Street.  There are a number of car parks situated around the venue - further details, along with directions for driving into the city from various directions can be found on the Foresight Centre guide here

Sponsored Places

The Sponsored Places application process is now closed.  Applicants will be contacted by 17th May 2019.

NoWAL has offered four sponsored places for this year’s conference Exploring & supporting diversity in academic libraries, on Friday 28th June 2019 at the Foresight Centre, University of Liverpool.

The four sponsored places include access to the full day of the conference, lunch, refreshments and attendance at breakout sessions throughout the day.  NoWAL will also pay towards travel expenses.  The total awarded will be up to the value of £100 (delegate rates for NoWAL members is £70).  

The recipients of the sponsored places have been asked to engage fully with social media throughout the day, playing an active part in tweeting from sessions and providing photographs of key events.  After the conference, they will be provide a blog/vlog post or similar, giving their thoughts and experiences of the day, for use on the NoWAL website and by the NoWAL Conference Planning team.


Call for Papers 

1st March 2019 - our Call for Papers for #nowal19 has now closed.  Thank you for all the amazing and interesting submissions.  The Conference Planning Team has been blown away by the quality of the papers submitted.  We are in the process of agreeing the programme for the day and will be in touch with everyone who submitted a paper as soon as we can. 

We welcome engaging and innovative papers from staff working within NoWAL member institutions, or from external institutions, from practiced presenters to those ready for their first conference experience.  Submissions are invited from individuals, as well as collaborative contributions from within one institution or across organisations.  We welcome papers which relate in whole or in part to our conference themes.

  • Short paper: 20-minute presentation, with 10 minutes for questions
    • Workshop: 45 minute session, including practical activities and audience engagement
    • Lightning Talks: 10-minute short presentations; participants in the lightning talks will have the opportunity to see several presentations during the session, with a panel Q&A 

    Your abstract should be a maximum of 300 words and state how your idea matches the theme of the conference.  Please check that the title of your paper is clear and reflects your presentation's content.

    The deadline for receipt of submissions was 5pm on Friday 1st March 2019.

    We offer a supportive environment to all presenters, from initial abstract submission to presenting your paper or workshop.  Please get in touch if you would like an informal discussion about your idea:

    Cancellation Policy

    Please note NoWAL's cancellation policy:

    • Cancellations made more than 28 days prior to the event date will be offered a full refund less an administration fee of £20 per delegate.
    • Cancellation(s) made 15 to 28 days prior to the event date: 50% of the registration fee will be charged.
    • Cancellation(s) made 14 days or less before the event date will be liable for the full registration fee.
    • Delegates wishing to cancel a booking must confirm this in writing.
    • Delegate 'no shows' are liable for the full event fee.
    • In the case of adverse weather and the event runs as scheduled, should you choose not to attend, you will still be liable for the full cost of your delegate fee(s).
    • Substitutions are allowed at any time at no extra cost.
